My research journey has been like a tour boat gliding across Lake Brienz, passing through picturesque villages along the way.
Over the years, I have been fortunate to work with many talented researchers across diverse fields, from Physics and Computer Science to Statistics. These precious experiences have greatly enriched my understanding of both science and engineering and the connections between them.
Alongside, I also developed many research ideas that I would like to explore in greater depth.
Establishing my own lab will allow me to focus sustained effort on several long-standing research directions. Transitioning from an associate research professor to a tenure-track assistant professor starts the next significant phase of my academic adventure, and I look forward to contributing to the advancement of quantitative research in education and psychology while mentoring the next generation of researchers in this field.

Biography
Cheng Liu, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology. Previously, he served as an Associate Research Professor at the Lucy Family Institute for Data and Society, where he also led data science efforts as the Lead Data Scientist for the Center for Social Science Research. Prior to that, he worked as a Computational Scientist at the Center for Research Computing. Dr. Liu holds Ph.D. degrees in Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and in Statistics from the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Liu specializes in statistical modeling and computational infrastructure development, with extensive experience collaborating across disciplines. His research interests include change-point analysis, machine learning, item response theory, cognitive diagnosis modeling, educational and psychological measurement, research software and platform development, and modern AI technologies, particularly their application to advancing educational and psychological research.
